JOHN HUNTER HOSPITAL

The John Hunter Hospital is the region’s major tertiary referral hospital for both paediatric and adult care. JHH ED sees approximately 67,500 presentations annually (18,700 are children) and is Australia’s only major trauma centre outside of a capital city. It is the busiest trauma service and ED in NSW. Opportunities exist in retrieval medicine with the expectation that this will soon encompass primary retrieval.

THE MAITLAND HOSPITAL

The Maitland Hospital is a busy Level 4 district hospital. The newly renovated ED unit sees around 42,450 patients per year (30% are children) with a steady increase in complexity. The Maitland area is one of Australia’s fastest growing non-metropolitan areas in the state.

CALVARY MATER NEWCASTLE

Calvary Mater Newcastle is a 188-bed teaching hospital which is the tertiary referral centre for the Hunter region for toxicology, medical, radiation and surgical oncology, haematology and palliative care and fulfils a district hospital role for general medicine, cardiology and general surgery. The toxicology service is supported by an excellent psychiatric service. There is a 6 bed ICU, an 8 bed coronary care unit and a stroke unit. There is 24 hour access to CT and ultrasound onsite. Nuclear medicine is on site during business hours. The ED sees 30,700 patients per year with an admission rate of 29%. There is FACEM involvement in toxicology and ICU.

BELMONT DISTRICT HOSPITAL

Belmont District Hospital has a modern ED with a wide range of cases and currently sees approximately 24,200 presentations annually. Belmont provides Special Skills term in both Anaesthetics and Emergency Medicine Administration. The hospital is located away from the hustle and bustle of Newcastle, close to the banks of Lake Macquarie.

TAMWORTH RURAL REFERRAL HOSPITAL

Tamworth is a regional referral centre for the New South Wales North West - a huge area of rolling plains, gum tree covered mountains and meandering rivers. Working at Tamworth hospital offers the unique experience of country living with world-class, sharp-end Critical Care. As well as your common ailments, our Emergency presentationsconsists of a mix of rural trauma, killer envenomations and late presenting illness (country people are tough).

PORT MACQUARIE

Port Macquarie is located on the Mid North Coast and offers mild weather all year round with beautiful beaches suitable for swimming and surfing. Our newly remodled Emergency Department is accredited for six months training and also offers a Special Skills ICU term.
